Early in the morning after Carl had left, Bruce and Beryl set up a chain, one side attached to the window frame and the other connected to a pair of handcuffs. After Harley had woken up, the pair locked him up. Harley told Carl “They grabbed me when I got up”. Dialogue is used to emphasise the brutality and lack of respect Aunt Beryl has towards the boys. When Carl returned home to find Harley locked up he was infuriated and marched right down to the bowls club. At this time Carl was experiencing a wide range of emotions, not sure whether he was feeling, angry, sad, disappointed, nervous, anxiety and fear. When he reached the bowls club he found Beryl and yelled at her loudly in front of everyone, “You shouldn’t have chained him up like that, Beryl”.
