Book One introduces the readers to the character Lieutenant Frederic Henry, who is portrayed as naive and did not think that the risks of war was not necessary terrible and it did not worry him. His two main friends are the Priest and Rinaldi and they both would share drinks at the bar and share their opinions on the war. They are with Lt. Henry as he develops and changes his view on war and women. After his return to the front his friends notice a change in his character and he realizes a change in his friends too. Rinaldi realizes the change in Henry when he says “ you act like a married man “ ( Hemingway 177 ). He describes his commanding officer as “ older and drier “ ( Benson 91 ), and says the town looks more run down. In the beginning of the novel his friends are always with him, and as it progresses, it soon becomes just Catherine and Henry. Lt. Henry is close to his friends and the tightness in his friendship is shown towards the end of the novel when his friend, Emilio is willing to assist Henry in a crime where death is a punishment in order for Henry and Catherine can stay together and to keep them both out of danger.
