The point of view in which “A&P” by John Updike is told in allows us understand teenage boys in the 1950s. This impacts the story because it allows the readers to know the teenage girls appearances and how they acted. Having the point of view from the boy also allows the reader to realize how the girls dresses was bizarre and highly unusual for the time period. If this story took place today the girl's appearance would not be as drastic as in the 1950s. It would be normal for teenage girls to come into a grocery store in swimsuits. The teenage boy in the short story was very judgmental; the boy being judgmental allowed the reader to think differently about the girls.
