Catholicism is the religion of nearly all Italians; it is the religion that we learned growing up. Catechism, First Communion, Sunday school, and church are what have instilled my values and beliefs that I have to this day. In addition to this, my father gave us rules to live, which some were profoundly essential. One such rule was if one cannot afford to not receive it back do not loan money. My mother ethnic background, I learned surprisingly little regarding it, thus I cannot communicate one example other than she is white. I can only speculate that she is from the south. This is all summarized by judging what you do not understand. Culture relativism is the opposite of ethnocentrism, thus being able to be on the outside and looking in on another culture without judging. I guess seeing the way my father was loving, affectionate, and pleasant to people that has molded myself into who I continue to be. My mother’s racism also molded myself into who I happen to be due to the fact that I vowed to never be that way. I may have been a little ethnocentric when I was younger, although as I reached adulthood I became culturally relative. I remain remarkably open minded when it comes to other people’s culture.
