A Walk in The Woods A Walk in the Woods is a true story about Bill Bryson and Stephen Katz. Bryson and Katz planned to hike the whole Appalachian Trail in one season. They are trying to complete a hike that most never fathom of doing while they are extremely under prepared physically, mentally, and emotionally. They don’t know what they’re in for and have many mishaps along the way. The book is a narrative written by Bryson himself as an account of his story along the Appalachian Trail. This book relates to an experience I had when I hiked the Appalachian Trail for six days. While reading A Walk in the Woods I thought back to my own adventures in which we met a hiker similar to Bryson and Katz when I hiked a small part of the Appalachian Trail. A Walk in the Woods focuses much on the silence and serenity of the wilderness and while myself and a group of eleven others hiked a part of the AT we met a woman named Alice who had been hiking on the AT since West Virginia with her dog Jack. To a group of people such as ourselves, who were only hiking for a couple of days, Alice seemed to be a pro hiker. While we were only completing about three to six miles a day she was hiking ten to twenty miles each day. She was similar to Bryson and Katz because she …show more content…
It made me think about how the thru-hikers that we met thought of us. It was very eye opening to read another perspective about an experience like this and even though things did not go as planned for Bryson and Katz they made the best of everything even if they never did hike the whole 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. They talked about people who had offered such kindness as to give them food and rides and I thought about my experience and when we gave extra food to thru-hikers and how happy they were. It didn’t seem like a sacrifice at all for us, but it meant the world to

About the time we were feeling our saddle sores from dealing with a particularly rough and narrow segment of the trail, our troop became stretched out more than usual. I recognized it, and debated whether to call for a rest stop or let things go because of my plan to confront the wayward Raiders. By peeking at my PDA, I could see we’d made reasonable progress. For now, I felt happy. I made my decision and clipped my tablet back on my belt, while the trail switched back on itself, opening up a much wider and pleasant stretch of trail.…

As the colors of the leaves are changing and the temperatures beginning to drop, hiking Kennesaw Mountain for the first time was definitely an exhilarating feat for someone who does not work out one bit. Beforehand, I decided to “Google” some information about the story behind this historical site and see what I could get out of this assignment. Needless to say, I found quite a bit of information about this National Park and all that has happened there. As I was climbing the rugged mountain, I thought about all the history that has occurred in a place that I call home. All this history began when the Cherokee people decided to make their home into what is now Cobb County and Kennesaw National Battlefield Park.…

Walking in the woods, trekking through miles and miles of goliath trees and gurgling brooks, patches of bramble, and the occasional duck-ridden pond. Where did those days go? I used to spend hours in the woods thinking I do not need to do anything else, but to head home for lunch. Yes, there I was, the 15-year-old who was not prepared for the next year to come, and what would come of my days spent in the morning dew of the woods. I’ve thought about this recently, and realize that I was ill-prepared for everything.…

Backpacking the Emigrant Wilderness, which runs along the spine of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, is one of my favorite experiences. The ten of us began our adventure in the evening, hiking from the trailhead to Camp Lake. On the way, storm clouds dropped a little rain but then gave way to scattered light over the surrounding peaks. After sunset, we climbed a high ridge above our campsite. The view West silhouetted trees under wisps of clouds.…

Riding on the LeHigh Portland Trail takes you from being surrounded by people to a place where you can finally be alone. It is here, by the Sinclair-Hegwald Bridge, that I found a place where there is no path. Walking off the path and through the woods, I can hear many things like the water running along the creek that we are walking by, the buzzing of the locusts, the chirping of the birds, and the crunching of leaves beneath my feet. As I walk here, I can cross the creek on the old railroad ties to a big fallen tree and a very unstable bridge. There are times that I have to balance myself by grabbing nearby vines that are dangling from trees.…

The sun light shown through the leaves of the forest onto the trail, the dirt on the forest floor was damp from the last days rain, roots of the trees raised from the grown like long bony fingers, the bushes that lined the trail were bright green, filled with green insects and thornes. The sound of the lake and dam grew louder as we approached the start of the trail. Holes in the middle of the trail forced us to take an alternate route into the forest. The bamboo was closely packed together making it hard to get through. After sliding in the mud and struggling to get the bikes through the stalks, we had reached the trail.…

It was a definite change of scenery to be immersed in nature with lush greenery, crisp air, and ocean views instead of the normal classroom scene. I liked that this experience was a chance to interact with my colleagues and learn who they are on a personal level subsequent to grading their three-minute stories the previous Fridays. From this hiking experience, I learned the value of teamwork, effective communication, and what encompasses wholesome leadership as well as what can transpire when there is no leadership. As like all experiences, there are some parts I cherished and others not as much.…
