Abigail Williams In The Crucible

Is witchcraft an actual thing? Can people be overtaken by the Devil and forced to do unruly things? Can it happen to a MAN? Maybe not in today’s world, but in Salem, Massachusetts, 1692, witchcraft seemed surreal. 11 females from a varying age were accused of witchcraft, with Abigail Williams at the head of the crew. The play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the reader shows how the men overrule the women in 1692. The men control almost all the power of social classes in the Puritan Society. If a woman defies a man, she will suffer. Although it is a wrong doing, Abigail Williams still chooses to defy. This is only to save herself from the noose. The Crucible takes place in late seventeenth century Salem, Massachusetts. Witchcraft overtakes this small town when many young …show more content…
I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!”(Miller 45). Abigail begs for forgiveness, and she admits to dancing in the woods. She then proceeds to one by one call out many girls that she claims to have seen dancing with the Devil. This shows an act of leadership and power by her. No woman would have the right in that Puritan society to call out and accuse one another, and Abigail goes against that fully. This also shows that she is the leader of the crew of bewitched females, due to the fact that she breaks composure under the slight scene of Tituba being let go from her death. No other girl had broke down and confessed to their crime, except Abigail. Another example that shows Abigail to be the leader of the group of bewitched girls is the fact that she talked back to Judge Danforth while in court. Not only did she rebuttal the judge, but she questioned his authority. She does so by saying “ Let you beware, Mr. Danforth. Think you to be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits? Beware of it! There is…”(Miller 100). Abigail goes against the power of a man in this scene

I disagree with Winona Ryder when she says Abigail Williams is not the villain of the piece. Firstly, Abigail threats her friends she will kill them if they tell. For example, she says she'll come to them in the dark of night with a knife and kill them. She shows how she doesn't value you her friends and would rather them die than them telling on her. Secondly, she lies when it comes to telling the truth that will cost someone's life.…

And that is all”(I). Abigail is a rebel because she is participating in witchcraft, which at the time was a serious crime that could cause her to be hung. Abigail is also a ruler in this because the reader can see that when she is saying this in the context Abigail is telling her group of friends what happened, and telling them to follow what she is saying happened in the woods. She shows the rebel archetype in this story when Abigail explained to Proctor in Act I, “I know how you clutch my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near! The Salem witch trials in the late 17th century exposed the flawed structure of the Puritan society in which women, especially young women, held very little power; however, a conniving and mischievous young woman, despite the misogynistic system of the village, rose to the top of society through manipulation and harlotry. Abigail Williams realizes that under normal circumstances, she holds no influence in Salem, but giving in to the irresistible desire for power, she seeks to change this by making a series of baseless accusations against the other citizens in town.
