Abigail Williams In The Crucible

Is witchcraft an actual thing? Can people be overtaken by the Devil and forced to do unruly things? Can it happen to a MAN? Maybe not in today’s world, but in Salem, Massachusetts, 1692, witchcraft seemed surreal. 11 females from a varying age were accused of witchcraft, with Abigail Williams at the head of the crew. The play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the reader shows how the men overrule the women in 1692. The men control almost all the power of social classes in the Puritan Society. If a woman defies a man, she will suffer. Although it is a wrong doing, Abigail Williams still chooses to defy. This is only to save herself from the noose. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!”(Miller 45). Abigail begs for forgiveness, and she admits to dancing in the woods. She then proceeds to one by one call out many girls that she claims to have seen dancing with the Devil. This shows an act of leadership and power by her. No woman would have the right in that Puritan society to call out and accuse one another, and Abigail goes against that fully. This also shows that she is the leader of the crew of bewitched females, due to the fact that she breaks composure under the slight scene of Tituba being let go from her death. No other girl had broke down and confessed to their crime, except Abigail. Another example that shows Abigail to be the leader of the group of bewitched girls is the fact that she talked back to Judge Danforth while in court. Not only did she rebuttal the judge, but she questioned his authority. She does so by saying “ Let you beware, Mr. Danforth. Think you to be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits? Beware of it! There is…”(Miller 100). Abigail goes against the power of a man in this scene
