Written by Susan Cain, Quiet is a book about introversion, and its various effects on an individual's life. The title of the book is Quiet - introverted people are associated with being quiet, but Cain proves that not all introverts are reticent, and that not all quiet people are introverts. Defying misconceptions is a common trend in her book. After all, Cain, founder of the Quiet Revolution, is an author, a lecturer, and is also an introvert. While reading this book, consider it in the framework of your high school - think to the past, to the present, to the future. In an English class, it is almost expected for there to be a variety of students - those who dominate socratic seminars, those who grudgingly participate for participation

However, in the past, people believed in the Culture of Character - public, first impressions were not as important as how one acted on a day-to-day basis in their private life. A hundred years later, despite studies showing otherwise, people are more likely to associate extroversion with intelligence. This is because extroverts tend to be better leaders (drawn from the assumption that talking more means that you are a better leader). However, extroverts aren’t as good listeners as introverts are, which can be deleterious for groupwork. Introverts possess unique concentration abilities, as compared to extroverts, thus Carr argues that introversion is advantageous to mankind. Then, Cain discusses how introversion can be inherited - about 40 percent of introverts inherit the traits from their parents. Personality, which comes after birth, and is shaped by experience, is the "building" of the foundation that is your innate behavioral patterns. Experience can relate to how a child is nurtured. The use of parental punishment - disapproving a child's actions, for example - is rooted in the use of anxiety. (use this?) According to Dobbs, who invented the Orchid Hypothesis, children are able to thrive well in any environment, but high-reactive types of kids can fail very easily, but also

The article, “The Evil Swirling Darkness” by Lauren Tarshis, said that people ignored the first signs of warning that a tornado was coming. This shows that danger can be real, even if you don’t think it is. For example, the text states that, “The family prayed for the safety of their missing relatives.” There were survivors, and they had hardships in and after the disaster. There are many effects of tornados.…

“I noticed that you have been quiet this whole time but do you have anything to say?” is a common question introverted people will come across many times in their life. In the book Quiet, Susan Cain breaks down and explains the intelligence, power, and leadership qualities that are hidden behind introverts. Cain also claims how many people in our modern Western society misunderstands and overestimates an introverted person and is more likely to value a person who is an extrovert because they are usually outgoing and outspeaking, which can be considered as an essential leadership traits. Cain being a graduate from Princeton University and earning a degree from from Harvard Law School, she effectively convinces her audience that the way our Western culture was built limits the introverts who can make a positive impact and contribution to our societies and how that can be changed by simply understanding introverts through the use of credible studies, cogent stories, and emotional appealing personal experiences.…

However Susan Cain is not trying to put extroverts down or say that they are lower to introverts. She’s saying that introverts have an important role to play in many areas of society that is being ignored. First the introvert’s larger willingness to listen to others and what they have to say makes them better leaders and it’s hardly recognized. Next is their careful attention personalities that help them protect themselves against dangerous situations.…

Animal Farm by George Orwell is a book where animals are often being compared to humans. Almost all of the animals are based off of a Russian historical figure. For instance, Benjamin represents George Orwell or other people who knew better, but more apathetic. Benjamin and I share a lot of similar traits. An example is how he and I are both sarcastic.…

Hidden Deceptions Inside the Classroom Although I agree with the authors’ ideas about how the students struggle to communicate in the classroom and how the curriculum bypasses communication between courses, my opinion differ from Tannen’s; gender is just a factor of many others that influence the behavior of a student. The sharing of ideas is fundamental for the development of a student, in the old Greece the education used to be taught by the spoken word, so the student and teacher had more interactions and discussions, therefore the understanding of the subject was easily grasped. Ms. Deborah Tannen explain why males participate in class more often than females in her article “How Male and Female Students Use Language Differently”. Meanwhile,…

I do not agree with the whole conclusion that John Piper presents in his blog post about tornadoes being the finger of God. Piper presents God as a God that causes destruction because society refuses to believe him. Well there is evidence to point out that but C.S. Lewis puts it in a good way is that pain and destruction are God’s way of calling us to repent. These events were not cause directly by God but were not stopped neither to have society as a whole think about life and how we ought to live our lives. I think C.S. Lewis explains it the best is that God allows these occurrences to happen because he desires for us to come back to him and that natural disasters humble us before the cross and cause us to seek what is truly wonderful.…

November 11, 1993 –a date typically dissociated with the remembrance of America’s involvement in Vietnam. On this day, the female Vietnam Veteran memorial was dedicated in honor of unspoken heroes, ones whose experiences are unparalleled to the soldiers who partook in the physical fight and incomprehensible to the public’s mind. These brave women, some married, engaged, or mothers, held the burden of a war with undefined intentions both physically and mentally, during combat and upon returning home. Although they played a role in a new kind of warfare, felt the personal sting of the anti-war movement, and suffered from PTSD much like their male counterparts, there was little research done on the nurses and nearly no recognition granted for nearly twenty years.…

Love and marriage, as shown in Beginners by Raymond Carver and Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston, is for the satisfaction of their own person, the moment when the we realize the amount of unconditional love our parents give us, we become aware of the power that love holds, but we never really wonder why it has that power, we just take it and go with it. He says that unlike shy people, quiet people are very sociable, and often have lots of friends. They don’t stay quiet because they’re afraid to speak up. They just don’t want to waste time saying anything that isn’t worth saying. Since talk encourages more talk, they choose to stay silent, instead of having meaningless conversations.” With this evidence, the author gives evidence, that the quieter you are, does not mean you are not intellectual, but rather observant, and in most cases, smarter and more mindful than that of their…

Writing is a tool that should be used to push limits, and expand horizons and challenge cultural norms. Unfortunately, not all personal writing challenges the reader however, the majority of good writing will. Writing is not inherently political, but it is one of the most direct ways to express political beliefs or push a specific agenda. Creative writing however is also shaped by an authors political belief thus making it a much more political form of writing; therefore, the more political the author the more that comes out in there writing. In Adrienne Rich’s work Diving into the wreck she has overtly political poems that are real and still relevant in todays politics this is very prominent in her poem “Rape”.…

However, we don’t always do. Quiet is a perfect example of that. Throughout the book the Author Susan Cain points out the flaws of extroverts and the powerful traits of introverts in the business world. However, the successful introverts that she mentions through her book, had to be an extrovert at some point. For instance, Rosa Parks for example was a powerful introvert, although in order to have stood up to the racial discrimination on the bus in 1955 she needed to become an extrovert.…
