The terminology Adverse Mental State along with Adverse Physiological State were introduced in 2003 by Dr Shappell and Dr Wiegmann in their Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) under Level 2: Preconditions for Unsafe Acts, Subdivision: Substandard Conditions of Operators.
