Aloe gel is commercially offered for oral consumption and many claims were made for benefits in various internal inflammatory conditions. Trial done on human patient showed a tonic effect on the intestinal tract with a reduced transit time. Also the bacterial flora appears to show benefit, with a reduction in a presence of yeasts and reduction in pH. Bowel putrefaction was decreased and protein digestion/absorption was improved.

Gastroprotective activity was only observed at the least dose tested. It has been suggested that the Aloe Vera extract have cytoprotective activity at the low concentration, therefore protection against mucosal injury by means of a mechanism different from gastric acid inhibition and neutralisation. Several mechanism have been given for the cytoprotection, namely increased mucosal blood flow, increased mucus synthesis and increased phospholipid content of the mucosal coating. But the exact mechanism is not known.

Whether its effect is direct or indirect, formation of new collagen takes place between the margins of wound when aloe is present. That collagen bond is responsible for increasing the tensile strength. If tensile strength will increase it was assume that collagen production is increased by aloe.
