One American value that many Americans wouldn’t admit themselves is materialism. As a society we tend to be very materialistic, and this can be seen in everything in pop culture from tv shows and movies to music. Because we are surrounded by celebrities' glamorous lives on social media, we tend to have a skewed view of what our lives should look like. Movies, especially, portray a chic, fabulous life that everyone else wants. When talking about the cliché mean girl in High School Confidential, Denby describes her as beautiful and rich, the girl every guy wants and every girl wants to be. This is only a slightly exaggerated representation of high school and even goes on into adult life, we always want what someone else has. When we finally do have nice things, we brag.
