America’s Melodies: An Analyzation of Patriotism in Lyrics
Since the creation of the genre in the late seventeenth century, patriotic music has demonstrated the expression of admiration and devotion for one’s country, boosted general morale in times of crisis, and rekindled pride in who we are, and what we represent, as a great nation. (Rhein 1). In an effort to increase nationalistic views, there are several qualities used throughout many historical melodies. Characteristics such as: unity, freedom, and pride are consistently utilized in an attempt to purvey a sense of patriotism within almost any genre of music.

It is the deep and meaningful lyrics of each song that usually reveal the basis of where the writer lies both politically and morally. Although his album is not originally political based, Bruce Springsteen was successfully able to transform this record into one with an underlying patriotic motif. This alone demonstrates the appreciation and overall aptitude for our daily personal freedoms; as without these freedoms, Springsteen would have never been able to release the album in the first place. Lastly, living in a country that is unable to agree on most major policy issues, there are still images of patriotism that remind people of what they agree on. This sense of pride in the the country is shown through both the iconic figures and unique song collections that have advanced over the years. However, as we as a country grow, one thing remains constant: When people see the flag, Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty, all clad in red white and blue, it says America is still a place where people have rights, a place where people are free and, for whatever flaws, it is still a place that stands for justice.
