An Analysis Of Gang Culture In Thrsher By Thrasher

“Culture is a fluid set of customs, traditions, beliefs, values, and practices developed over time by a specific group or community” is what I had to repeat over and over again throughout this whole semester. Section R class first learned what culture is throughout our eyes and how other cultures see it too. We watched a variety of short clips of different cultures and what they believed in. In some cultures, we thought that they were insane because we did not understand why they would do that. For example, in early China culture, they practice foot binding. Footbinding is unnatural to us because our cultural would think it was ridiculous to crush all your bones to have a specific figure in your feet. I know now that gang culture is a lot more than rebelling against the community. The reasons why gangs form is because children and teens are discluded from social interaction because of their background, their household is not loving, and they want some control. Gang people were like normal citizens walking down the street, until they started getting harassed. They just want to be in a society that accepts them for who they are in general. In Thrasher, he goes more in depth about why and how gang formed. Thrasher has opened my eyes on gang culture because the book shows how gangs are just trying to get other citizen's attention. In a short clip from one of the presentations, one gang formed because they were being discriminated from the whites. The city had a line to separate the gangs and the whites. If the gangs passed the line, they would be beaten up right away from the cops. Culture in general has opened my eyes more too because in the documentary videos, it shows how different culture is around the world. It showed me that we can not discriminate people for how they look and what they do, because everyone has a different tradition, beliefs, and customs that they practice. Even though it may not be right in our culture, it could be perfectly fine in theirs. For example, all the different languages that are around the world. Our culture may think the Chinese language is so abnormal because they have so many different letters in the alphabets and some many different words meaning different things, but the Chinese culture believe that it’s normal and regular.
