There is no doubt in my mind that today, 30 years later, we still have Theory X managers. According with McGregor Theory X, managers tend to have a negative, pessimistic view of employees and display more coercive, autocratic leadership styles using external means of controls, such as threats and punishment. Additionally, their attitudes hold that employees dislike work and must be closely supervised in order to do their work.

We as a leader, have to set the example for others. We have to make sure that we are making the right decision, that way others will follow that. For example, if I am in my duty weekend and my Sailors see me in a bar drinking, they will do the same. The will ignore the rule of not drinking on duty because they saw their leaders doing it. If he do it, we can do it too. Being ethical is extremely important and will pay off in the long run. Being honest and admit any fault or mistake can avoid further consequences and probably solve the situation in a timely matter. Additionally our military structure teach us and enforce us to abide by our Navy Core Values: Honor, Courage and Commitment. Values and Ethics go hand by hand and if we comply with our core values, we are promoting ethical behavior as well. “Do the right thing even when no one is looking”

Absolutely. The foundation of ethics start at home during our childhood. Our parents are responsible to implement them and to explain the benefit of it. A person with a solid understanding in ethics can encourage others to do the same regardless where they are coming from.
