The main character Jorgis, is a lithuanian immigrant who has migrated to chicago with his family and is newly married to Ona. When Ona’s father died, Jorgis found the opportunity to move to the New World with the whole family in order to escape the economic oppression they were encountering in Lithuania. America was the land of opportunity and they believed that they would live a more comfortable life in Chicago because members of their village had found success. Jurgis and his family go to Chicago and start up their life working in factories while the children attended school. After working in horrid conditions, they were forced to make their children work because they pay was not enough to sustain their bills and their living.Their family faced many challenges like the death of Jurgis’ father, the birth of Ona’s new baby, Jurgis being injured and without a job for a few months, leading them to be in a more difficult economic situation then they were led into believing. When they arrived, they expected to see the roads covered in gold but that was far from the truth. A common quote throughout the book was Jurgis saying “I will work harder”. , as if he were responsible for their situation. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote the book to capture the triumph and tragedy in the American Society in the 1920’s. The protagonist, Nick Carraway is telling the story of Jay Gatsby, a newly rich man. Jay was born to some poor farmers and as a young boy aspired to grow into a rich and successful man. This dream of him rekindled when he met Daisy, the love of his life. He felt as though he could give everything to Daisy that she could ever want or need except for the financial security. For five years, he worked hard in an illegal business (bootlegger), becoming the talk of the town. He was what Americans aspired to be and do; go from rags to riches. Gatsby was able to live his childhood illusion of being a rich successful man but new acquired what he worked so hard for; the love of Daisy Buchanan. Every weekend we threw great luxurious parties in hopes that one day Daisy would show up. Eventually she did but he was not enough to make her stay. Although Jay Gatsby was rich and did not lack in any sort of materialistic thing, he did not have the one thing he had worked hard
