The song “Chokra” is the 1996 ICC World Cup song for the Sri Lankan cricketers. “The Sri Lankans were the first host country to win the World Cup, the first country to win the World Cup batting second and it was also their first time ever winning the ICC World Cup” (espncricinfo.com). Though the song is not in English it could be seen or even gathered from the video that it was about national pride, gender and the unification of the masses.

The West Indies did not play in the match itself but after looking a saw a man of African descent as one of the umpire and I came to find out that he was from the West Indies. Though we did not participate in the match we were represented. “Stephen Anthony Bucknor from Jamaica was the umpire for the match between the Sri Lankan and the Australians. He was nicknames “Slow Death Bucknor”, he umpired 128 test matches more than anyone else” (espncricinfo.com). The match referee was also a West Indian Clive Hubert Lloyd from British Guiana. He was a hard-hitting batsman and said to be the most successful captains in West Indian cricket history. Lloyd nicknamed “Big C. Hubert” was said to be the mastermind behind leading the West Indies to the top of the cricket world for two decades straight (espncricinfor.com).
The song may not be in English but by listening to the rhythm and even the lyrics it has a catchy tune especially the “Chokra” part. In listening to the song it reminded me of the national West Indies anthem by David Rudder “Rally Round The West Indies”. The song ‘Rally Round The West Indies is about national pride and unity in the West Indies and I Believe that the song “Chokra” fall along these lines I think that what this song does for and to us when we hear it in the West Indies does the same for the people in Sri Lanka.
