Ancient Creation Myths

A majority of people believe that ancient creation myths are weird and don’t tell us anything about real history of life, but I don’t. Personally, I think ancient creation myths basically created our life stories and without them we wouldn’t have anything to back up our history. Creation myths represent natural occurrences in the world and without the similarities creation myths wouldn’t be important. The Egyptian, Babylonian, and Hebrew creation myths symbolize real events that have happened that make up our life history and it’s incredible.
Creation myths tell us in detail how are world came to be, who made it and what rules we should abide by. Myths are not simply “weird” or “false” when you look at history because they are stories that represent how our life came to be, the way we should

The Egyptian and Babylonian creation myths aren’t emphasized as much as the Hebrew creation myth today because of the differences they have. The Hebrew creation myth is shown through the Bible0, which we were taught is the words of our God and that is what we should follow. Everyone has the choice to not believe in the Hebrew creation myth, but they choice to because without it we wouldn’t have history or understand how the world was composed. Each creation myth is different and all contribute to part of our history.
The Egyptian creation myth strikes me as similar to the Hebrew myth more than the Babylonian myth. “Out of the swirling waters rose Autum; he created himself using his thoughts and the sheer force of his will” (Egyptian Creation Epic 1:2). The Egyptian creation story directly tells us that their god created himself from powers that we could never understand, which is like the Hebrew story. Their God was so powerful that he created man from his tears of joys from finding his kids. That shows me that the Egyptians had one powerful God if he could create man just from his

Each culture has its own historical and cultural identity that is forged from different aspects like its creation myths of how the world or the culture began. For the Ancient Egyptians their creation myth is detailed in pyramid texts, for Jews and Christians the creation narrative come from the first book in the Bible, Genesis, but for the Ancient Mayans (living in southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras) their creation narrative comes from an ancient text, the Popol Vuh. The Popol Vuh, also known as the council book, is one of the most significant creation narratives that lays the foundation of the Mayan culture and traces the genealogy of the Mayan people. It is the foundation of the Quiche people with its creation narrative…

Normally, as someone who is highly invested in the idea of science and creation, there is a lack of understanding when it comes to thinking about the different myths of creation. For me, creation all started when a group of molecules happened to join together and eventually evolved into the many organisms that are seen every day. It never occurred to me that there is such a difference between different creation myths. During the first couple of weeks in the semester it became clear that creation is rooted in many cultures in diverse ways.…

The book of Genesis in the Old Testament of the Hebrew Bible has many similarities to the poem “The Epic of Gilgamesh” translated by Danny P. Jackson. These two pieces of literature originate as creation stories. The book of Genesis tells the story of how Yahweh created man and the earth. “The Epic of Gilgamesh” tells the story of the quest for immortality. “The Epic of Gilgamesh” dates back many years before the Bible and the book of Genesis, but many of the stories are similar.…

The Epic of Gilgamesh is very similar to the Holy BIble in that they both originate from the same region, and Gilgamesh and Noah were commanded by their God to build a ship. There were many differences between Ancient Hebrew culture and other cultures in the Ancient Near East. One difference is that the Hebrew Bible consists of scribes and many of the Ancient Near East were illiterate. Also the God of Hebrew Bible, Yahweh, took a human form and characteristics of a human. Correspondently, Darshan’s article discusses “as-yet-undiscussed parallels from ancient Greek and Mediterranean texts” in correlation with the Bible with two perspectives (Darshan 689). The first perspective correlates Genesis from the beginning with the Israelite children to the Greek mythology that parallels the stories. The article concludes that the Mesopotamian literature has become prevalent due to the reign of kings over the first century B.C.. Darshan states, “I have presented two of the principal models of foundation narratives prevalent…

Hypatia a Greek famous woman philosopher once said, “Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fantasies. To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them, and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them.” This quote is simple but yet says so much about how important a myth is told or thought, especially to children. A myth is defines as, “a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.”…

To me, myths are how peoples throughout history have explained odd events, explained their stories and enriched their culture. The word “myth” is derived from the Greek word “mythos”, although myths were around before the Greeks rose to prominence. To people who come up with and tell the myths, they often hold spiritual or religious prominence. There have been hundreds of myths through time in various cultures, although many of the myths of the Romans and Greeks are the most well known. Myths generally have a few things in common, one of those things being that they generally incorporate non-human characters such as gods/goddesses and supernatural creatures, and they are often sacred and…

I have learned that myths are all unique based on the culture that they come from and what their “truth” is. Also, I have learned that myths have a lot of meaning that isn’t immediately seen, and answer many questions people have that give them hope and self-worth. Myths don’t only answer questions, they also ask questions that keep people wondering about what is true and what isn’t. When the myths were created, they enjoyed by different cultures and weren’t questioned because they explained so much. Today, we are trying to find out how factual these myths really are instead of respecting their creativity and hidden meaning.…

This is evident in both when the God(s) feel immediate regret after seeing what they have done to the Earth and mankind. Even though there are many similarities between the two stories, there is no exact proof that the author of Genesis had knowledge of the Epic of Gilgamesh. It does not seem that the biblical version depended on the Mesopotamian story. However, the Jew’s have a reputation for passing down information from one generation to another. Many people will know and believe the Genesis story rather than the Epic of Gilgamesh, because of it is the word of God.…
