1. Background Information
This should include background on the scientific question you wish to address, why it is important, information on the study species, and why it was chosen to answer this question. This information should lead the reader to the logical basis of your hypothesis.
Animal models are still commonly used in product testing, especially for bath products. These substances are usually injected into or rubbed on the laboratory animals in eye or skin irritancy tests (Unknown, 2011). Such cruel and inhumane methods leave many rabbits blinded. This cannot be justified as an important contribution to modern science. Obvious and subtle differences between humans and animals in terms of our physiology, anatomy, …show more content…
(Yaeger RG, 1996). My reasoning behind this is that it had already been proven to work (when using mascara) in the UK experiment and that it is a larger size than Blepharisma japonicum - which would make it easier to see and therefore easier to tell how a product affects it, since ciliates move very quickly and can be hard to count. In fact, they can be so difficult to track that it is nearly impossible to count them without slowing them down, which is why I will be adding drops of Protoslo (a clear, colorless solution that slows the movement of protozoa) into the petri dishes to make it easier to count them. (Mr. Hessler brought this wonderful product. It should be praised for all eternity for its ease of …show more content…
My IVs were chosen for: research availability (can’t compare if you don’t have the data), market availability (can’t test them if I can’t obtain them), cost (although I’d have liked to test some of the really expensive brands, since they’re often the ones with the highest toxicity ratings, they were too expensive for me), and diversity (I tried to take samples from all parts of the toxicity spectrum as another possible indicator for faulty procedures- ie if a body wash with the highest toxicity ratings has a smaller percent death than that of a product with the lowest toxicity level something must be up). By analyzing the results of these variables I hope to find which type of product(s) works well with this test and whether or not each product has a specific toxicity range where the test works (or doesn’t
