Lots of the concern for animal welfare depends on many given factors such as socioeconomic conditions, culture, religion and tradition (Wilkins). Animal welfare is the protection for animals from mental or physical harm, no matter how minor the damages. These damages vary from driving the animals insane to the point where they don't seem responsive to minor bruises that ruin consumable meat. Organizations such as the OIE (The World Organization for Animal Health) ensure that animal welfare standards are strictly science-based but also consider other non science-based standards. Certain Science-based standards include treating the animal according to its habitat. This standard means that the farm or place where the animal is kept will reenact normal living standards as seen in the wild for that specific animal. Most non science-based standards include common knowledge of the animal such as the dietary habits of the animal.Over the years, NGOs have gathered together to create ICFAW (The International Coalition for Farm Animal Welfare). This coalition was formed to represent the interests of NGOs and the opinions, comments and information from these animal welfare organizations will be indicative of the OIE decision-making process. However, after beginning to join in protecting animal welfare, views from multiple NGOs varied, many different ways depending on the area of which they are from. The main three continents and country that seemed to have many NGOs and different views on animal welfare was Africa, United States, and Europe. South Africa fought heavily on delaying any animal welfare until the country becomes better developed and the education problem becomes fixed. However, with the United States being a developed country and having an impressive education system, their problem lies with consolidation. Consolidation is overcrowding in a farming sense, and it can cause disease
