The students are not complete strangers but they differ socially and come from different cliques. Claire Standish is a beautiful and pampered princess, Brian Johnson a nerd or a bookworm, Allison Reynolds a reclusive outcast, Andrew Clarke an athlete (state champion wrestler) and John Bender a rebel. The students are supposed to spend eight hours and fifty-four minutes silently, not moving from their seats and writing a 1000-word essay on “who you think you are”. The principal Richard Vernon, occasionally checks on them and stirs them up. The students spend detention talking and arguing with each other while they are all exhibiting their natural characteristics. Brian once attempted suicide with a flare gun because he received a failing grade in a wood working class. Andrew the athlete, has trouble thinking for himself and landed in detention due to an immoral act that was supposed to impress his father. Allison is a strange compulsive liar, and John is a bad boy rebel that comes from an abusive household. The students discover that they all have family problems which are negatively affecting their lives. These slowly revealed secrets bring the students together and they form interpersonal relationships; some of which turn out to be romantic. At the end of detention the students part ways outside the school, some of which sharing souvenirs or gifts from each other. Allison is given Andrews state champion patch and Claire gives John one of her diamond earrings. The movie ends with John Bender putting on Claire’s earring and throwing his fist in the air as a sort of spiritual victory.
