Argumentative Essay On Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time-- created as a way to conserve daylight and save energy is a practice that dates back to the early 1900s. Most countries have adapted to the practice of turning the clocks ahead one hour in the spring, and then turning them back an hour in the fall. Yet, there’s a lack of knowledge of how and why Daylight Saving Time came about, which has caused a lot of debate over whether it should end once and for all. Daylight Saving Time should be abolished as it has no purpose and causes a great deal of confusion and aggravation, as well as having negative effects on our health.
Daylight Saving Time (DST) has sparked controversy since Benjamin Franklin first proposed the idea at the beginning of 20th century (About Daylight...).

Many people have this idea in their minds that DST somehow helps farmers, but in reality, DST actually negatively affects most farmers. Farmers have been against the system since it was first enacted because it disrupts their daily routine (Does DST...). Farmers work by the sun, not the clocks, so by setting the clocks forward an hour they have to wait an extra hour for the dew to evaporate to harvest hay. It also makes milking cows more difficult as cows are used to being milked at a certain time, and the change in time can affect both the cow and the milk. But if DST was not supported by farmers (and that’s why many believe we still use it) then is there a real reason to still keep it …show more content…
Many people say they enjoy that extra hour of sleep they get in the fall, but that extra hour could be causing major health problems. Light dictates when we feel tired as well as regulates hunger and hormone production (Kramer). The changes that comes out of nowhere (at least to our bodies) causes a lot of confusion and makes it more difficult to get up in the morning before the sun rises. In the fall when we gain an hour of sleep our bodies once again have to adjust to going to sleep at an earlier time (because we gain an hour while we’re sleeping) but still get up at the same time in the morning. Messing with your internal body clock has inverse effects on your quality of sleep, which could lead to sleep deprivation (The History...). Sleep deprivation can lead to a lot of issues such as daytime fatigue, decreased memory, increased risk of heart attack or heart disease as well as increased risk of getting in a car crash. Studies have shown that DST is linked to an increase of automobile accidents in the days following the start of DST, mainly due to tired drivers. You may think that losing or gaining just one hour couldn 't possibly affect you this much but it can, and it

Have you ever wondered why the U.S does daylight savings time and the rest of the world doesn’t? The U.S has been using daylight savings time for years while other countries have stopped after WW2. In the articles“Pros & Cons: Daylight Savings time” by Proscons.org and the article “The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time” by David Prerau they state that daylight savings is both good and bad. Although some argue that the U.S should eliminate daylight savings, I believe that daylight savings should remain because of the reduced exposure to artificial light and the decreased risk of car accidents involving children in the afternoon. One advantage to daylight savings time is the reduced exposure to artificial light.…

Have you ever been late to school because you slept in. Well I have done that because I did not go to bed at the right time. Mostly everyone has a time to be in bed, because of school in the morning and some kids don’t follow that rule which the students should. The students should follow that rule because they have school in the morning and they have to be there early. I believe that the time of school should stay the same because it would cost more money, you wouldn't have problems if you went to bed earlier, and it would disrupt after-school activities if we went later.…

In a Washington Post article, it talks about a survey held in Montgomery county, where almost half of the counties teachers took part. the survey was about the later start times for school, and 63% of the survey takers said that making the school start later would not have any impact on academic achievement. This idea of there being no academic improvement from later school start times is false, as it has already been proven that students do benefit in grades because of the extra rest they recive from schools starting later. It is also said in the report that parents along with activists are pushing to get school start times later, so it is not only students, but their families too that want this change. It seems like most of the opposition for the later school times is coming from the schools themselves, instead of the families who all agree that they want this change.…

High school students are expected to sit through 7 hours of instruction, complete 2-4 hours of homework, have a social life, be active in their family, and get the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep all in one day. Now with studies showing teenagers experience a change in their internal clocks, there has to be some adjustment made. Students are having a harder time waking up and falling asleep early enough to be prepared for school. To help students cope with this change in their internal clocks; high schools should begin later, and end later in the day. Hearing an alarm clock go off at 6:30 in the morning is an awful and discouraging sound.…

A Later Start Time “Sleep is a simple yet powerful potion with the ability to enhance learning, boost creativity, fight infection, fuel growth, and balance mood.” says Dr. Helene A. Emsellem, the author of Snooze...or Lose! Middle schools should change their start times to later in the day because more sleep means better academic performance, less sleep deprivation, and would positively affect athletic performance. People argue that a later start time will affect extracurricular sports, and that the bus schedules will conflict with the start times. An argument that there is still plenty of time after before the sun goes down in the fall and the winter to practice, and more sleep improves athletic performance. Schools should change their start time to later in the day because more sleep means better academic performance.…

Daylight saving time or the DST is considered to be a time managing frame that extends the use of sunlight throughout the country. DST was first used in the United States in 1918 and it was used by most Americans. It was also known to be used in other countries as early as 1784. Looking at the arguments regarding DST, it is clear that sunlight is easier to manage than standard timeframes. Taking this position is easy because of how the adding or deducting an hour from your clock can save an extra hour of daylight for the few months DST is in effect.…

For example, in Cheshire’s article she describes the trickle down effects that lack of sleep can cause for students, “Sleep-deprived teens tend to eat more carbohydrates and fats, with every hour of sleep that is lost increasing the odds of obesity by 80%. Adolescents that go to sleep at midnight or later are also more likely to suffer from depression and have suicidal thoughts.” (Cheshire) Cheshire inferred that students who have less sleep are more likely to become depressed or obese, which may not apply to all students. Additionally, Edwards expresses that “Students who start school one hour later have 1.3 fewer absences than the typical student—a reduction of about 25 percent. Fewer absences therefore may also explain why later-starting students have higher test scores: students who have an early start time miss more school and could perform worse on standardized tests as a result.”…

What would you rather have, a later or earlier start for school? Many students would like to have a later start time for school but if you think about it you would need to make up the time you slept in. Also many people believe that the only thing starting later would do is put more money into stuff we don’t need. Based on the article titled, “More zzz’s can lead to more A’s: Seattle Schools Move Start Time for Teens”, one believes that Beaumont High School should not change the start time to begin class later due to schedule changes, transportation, and sports schedule. First off, later start times for school will not only affect our school schedule but will also affect our sleep schedule.…
