In his book Midnight in Mexico, Alfredo Corchado chronicles a major death threat he has had pinned against him as a reporter in Mexico documenting the truth about cartel violence. Throughout the book, Corchado addresses how the citizens of Mexico react to him as an American reporter, their knowledge of the cartel violence, and what their hopes for the future of Mexico are. Though the account of his events is largely negative, mainly due to the possibility of a looming death threat, Corchado continually expresses hope for Mexico. He expresses hope that Mexico will find the right timing to create more opportunities, more equality, and more justice.…
This week’s readings discusses different aspects of the Mexican war. In “Mexican Views of the Mexican-American War discusses the origin of the war between Mexico and the United States, it states “To explain then in a few words the true origin of the war, it is to say that the insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by our weakness, caused it”, the weakness that it’s referring to is the Mexican government. Like we discussed on Thursday, Mexico has always had a chaotic government that contributed the loss of Mexican land. It can be lead to think that if Mexico had a secure government, the loss of the land wouldn’t have happened. Mariano Otero’s “Considerations Relating to the Political and Social Situation of the Mexican Republic in the Year 1847” relates to the previous reading because he explains the Mexican government and weak army contributed to the loss of…

When studying American Military history, there are several recurring characteristics of America’s manner in which it conducts warfare. Many colonists who lived in America before it became a country had similar ideologies to the Americans who came after them one hundred years later in the Civil War. Despite the lapse of time, early Americans can be characterized as being uniquely opportunistic in the way in which they conduct war. Americans collectively operated on the ideology of opportunity. America in its early stages was not the military power it is today, therefore it to relied on patiently waiting for the enemy to expose any sort of weakness to capitalize on.…
