Connie let Arnold Friend grab her hand, and she was escorted to the gold painted jalopy that awaited her. Her limbs were limp and all her senses shifted as if she was floating through empty space. She slowly sat in the front seat of the car and watched the view of her cardboard house diminish as she drove off with Arnold Friend and Ellie.
She remained frozen in her seat as if she was under a formidable spell. The thought of escaping no longer seemed plausible because she knew that Arnold Friend had taken his hold on her and that he would never let go. Her body felt numb and void of emotion, with the only thing that could be noted was the soft hum of the latest tunes playing on the radio. It went under her notice that she was crying.

“That’s right. Now look here, here’s that nice sunny field I promise I’d take you.”
Connie took no effort in lifting gaze. She remained staring down, focusing on the tops of her shoes. The car slowed down to a stop, and Arnold Friend turned off the radio.
“Okay Ellie, Connie and I are going to go to the field. You stay here and don’t mess anything up, you understand?” Friend said as he got out of the car.
Ellie silently obeyed and watched quietly. Connie heard Arnold Friend’s footsteps come closer to her door and soon felt his hand once again around hers. She still remained isolated, lost in her own world.
“We’re going to go into the field now, Connie. And I’m going to show you what love really is, the kind of love you hear in the songs. I'll hold you so tight you won't think you have to try to get away. You’ll give into me and you’ll love me. Doesn’t that sound good?”
Connie replied as if all remnants of her soul had left her body.
