Name: Haig Messerlian
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that not all high schools are preparing students for college.
Thesis: High School educators are not preparing students for college.
I. Introduction
A. Attention Getter: Close your eyes, I want you all to imagine the day we graduate from CSUN. How old are you? Are you as old as you thought you would be? Did it take you the 4 years that you had planned to spend here at CSUN? Did it take longer? Think about it for a bit. You can open your eyes now. According to New York Times magazine, “At most public universities, only 19 percent of full time students earn a bachelor’s degree in four years” (NYT).
B. Introduce topic/motivate audience: Today, I’ll explain why we …show more content…
Preview Main points/Thesis Statement: First, I will explain how teachers are not preparing students for college, then I will discuss the reasons why they aren’t and the negative effects, and lastly, how they could and should prepare students in the future to avoid the issues we are facing today.
Transition: Let us begin talking about the issue at hand.
II. Body
A. Problem: The majority of students in college today spend more than four years trying to earn just their bachelor’s degree, and for those trying to transfer into a university, they spend more time there than at the actual university, as well as 1.5 times the amount they should be paying to graduate.
B. According to Dr. Bob Neuman, “When students enter into college freshman year, they often take relaxed approach to college” (USA Today). It is public schooling that did this. Teachers don’t help their students for the long run, they don’t have them do anything extra that they would benefit from, other than their classwork.
1. Cause: A high school student, especially one in the 9th grade has no idea about traumatic problems he will have to face in the not too far off future, the cause of his problems are high school …show more content…
Taking college classes early will reduce the stress and anxiety students have in college.
1. Plan: My plan to solve problems with debt issues, and graduating later on, is very simple. For students who can handle a fast paced class they should take more, Advanced Placement classes. And as for those who don’t test well but also want to avoid future problems, they should enroll in a community college and begin taking classes as early as 9th grade. They should take a lighter high school schedule and stack up on college courses. And even now, we can and should still take community college classes over summer and or winter break to finish sooner.
2. How it will work: “California Education Code section 48800 provides that the governing board of a school district to determine which students may benefit from advanced scholastic work,” it is up to the counselors to help the students that are capable of doing the work to push them (CDE). If kids take 2 classes per semester starting 9th grade up until 12th even without summer and winter classes they should have 48 units done before they even enter college. That way they clear up 2 semesters worth of work without even feeling that heavy of a load. AND COLLEGE CLASSES ARE FREE WHEN YOU ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL! You would have completed two years’ worth of work that at CSUN costs someone 15 thousand dollars without books or parking. They will be able to graduate in three years if they wanted to, or they could actually enjoy the college experience
