Baseball and football has changed over many years. Until the 1920’s there wasn’t real football or baseball teams. Football was big in college, but there weren’t international teams at the time. The first African American to play in major league baseball was Babe Ruth. He hit almost 60 homeruns in the year 1921. When teams were made there were teams for separate races, because segregation was still part of this time. African Americans and Caucasians/White people could not play on the same team.

It was called the APFA (American Professional Football Association). Now it’s called the NFL which is the national football league. The APFA had only 14 teams in one league. There were no playoffs but they had a championship game for the top 2 teams in the league only. Today we have a total of 32 teams in the league with 2 conferences which are the AFC and the NFC with 3 divisions each. There are playoffs with 6 teams with 2 teams that have a first round bye for the top 2 teams for each conference only. (Farnen, J. 2014, January 16. The helmets in the 1920s were all made out of leather. They had no protection, padding or facemask and that’s very dangerous (Farnen). Now today, we have numerous brands including Riddell had developed the revolution speed which is the top helmet in the market. There were separate teams made for African Americans. Also, they got treated poorly. Used equipment was passed down when white people got new equipment. Major baseball teams weren’t big for African Americans, and only a few teams were created for them to play on (Baseball Origins, Growth and Changes in the Game. 2004). White people always had the upper hand. They got new equipment first, and got to play on major baseball leagues. There were also more teams created for white people to play on. This was unfair to African Americans who wanted to play, although many people didn’t complain because they still had the right to play
