It is important to show that I value time. Thus, I have to arrive early for the committee meeting which I have called for to show that it is of importance to me. In the meantime while waiting for my other committee members to arrive, I can start conversing one-on-one with my committee members. This establishes better relationship thus enhancing communication as they will feel more comfortable to ask questions later. (Greenberger, 2013). After the committee meeting, I should leave last. This will display commitment and dedication and also allow them to ask any other questions after the meeting (Greenberger, 2013). The three factors that influence whether we present an authentic self to others are those with whom we are communicating with, the communication context and the goal behind the interaction (Gergen, 1971 as cited in (Dobkin, 2006) Firstly, whom we are communicating with influences whether we present an authentic self to others. The idea that we present ourselves differently to different audience is due to the social element of “me” which relates authenticity and the need for recognition (Vanini & Franzese, 2008). For example, when working with a committee, I have to be the person that I want to work with (P.S, 2008). I should be confident and actively participate in avenues to improve the Family Day event. This will encourage my committee members to strive harder as well as promote productivity in the workplace. Thus, encouraging interpersonal communication, in which one individual is attributing meaning to another’s behaviour. The act of presenting self is known as doing facework (Goffman, 1967 as cited in (Dobkin, 2006). Confirmation, rejection and dejection are the three possible reactions to the face we present to others (Watzlawick, Beavelas & Jackson, 1967 as cited in (Dobkin, 2006).
