The first half of the semester we watched a total of 5 different movies. Each of these movies had different storylines, characters, settings, and motives. However one thing they all had in common was character development. The two movies that stuck out most to me were Billie Elliot and My Life as a Dog.

Billie Elliot was directed by Stephen Daldry, a well-known stage director, photographed by Brian Tufano, and written by Lee Hall. It was seen to take place in 1984 and released in 2000. The setting was in Durham County, England, which at the time was a coal mining town.Billie’s father and brother Tony both shared the occupation as miners.Billie was sought to follow in those footsteps as soon as he was matured enough. With the strike foremost on Billie’s father and Tony's minds, Billy is left largely to his own where abouts. His father was giving him money to participate in the

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche believed, “[f]amily love is messy, clinging, and of an annoying and repetitive pattern, like bad wallpaper.” This ‘bad wallpaper’ perfectly describes the family dynamic created in Bernice Frieson’s short story, “Brother Dear.” Consequently, the family of the protagonist, aside from her brother, can be classified as the antagonists of the story. Sharlene, the protagonist, and her older brother Greg both have differing aspirations; however, they both face a similar obstacle in the way of their goals, their family. It is not a single member of their family that presents these challenges, but rather all of them in dissimilar ways.…

The two movies I choose are Talladega Nights and Hardball. Hardball is an inspiring story in which a man who is on a bad path in lights loses all his money, and is forced to coach a baseball team of underprivileged kids and ends up caring for them. He leads the tea to a championship, and they lose a player to a gunshot, but they join together and win! Talladega Nights is the story of Ricky Bobby, a race car driver who was mistreated and abandoned by his father. He thought that he had to win to get love, then he lost everything, found love anyway, and won the biggest race.…

In 1973, David L. Rosenthal started a provocative study of mental hospital. This study is “On Being Sane in Insane Places”. Rosenthal motivation was to figure out if psychologist, psychiatrist, and other mental health professionals could really distinguish between the mentally ill and the mentally healthy based on a diagnosis brought upon certain characteristics. Those characteristics included the context of the behavior, the persistence of the behavior, the social deviance the person presents, their subjective distress, the psychological handicap they might experience, and the effects on their functioning that the behavior might cause (Hock, 2013). Rosenthal decided to start this study because he questioned if those characteristics that created…

My favorite movie would have to be Silver Linings Playbook, written by Matthew Quick and Directed by David O. Russell. This movie identifies a variety of different genres: comedy and romance-drama are just two of these. This movie can relate to a range of different people; the themes are easily identifiable. Silver Linings Playbook is about a struggling man, Pat Solitano Jr., portrayed by Bradley Cooper. The movie begins with Pat leaving a mental institution with his mother, the movie then flashes back to when he finds his wife, Nikki, sleeping with another man.…

These qualities make a movie great and worthy of being watched. Without all this, a movie would be horrible and dumb, in my opinion.…

Gloria Steinem once stated that “Being misunderstood by people whose opinions you value is absolutely the most painful.” Society can be a cruel place to live for those who do not fit the mold. This mold excludes deformity and so called strange or abnormal behavior. But this cruel treatment does not exclude people who cannot control certain aspects of themselves. Margret Atwood’s “Lusus Naturae” portrays humanity as cruel and harsh to those thought of as monsters or unworthy people who cannot contribute to society.…
