It would be an understatement to say that the combination of biology and medicine has merely peaked my interest, considering the profound understanding I have digested from appreciating a diversity of biology textbooks and research publications. Since middle school, I have motivated myself to advance my knowledge of the molecular, cellular, and genetic aspects of biology through both independent study and competitions, as to progress my academic ambitions. Consequently, the amalgam of lectures, firsthand laboratory experiences, and exposure to scientific actualities with the Biomedical Research Academy would be an advantageous and structured extension of my current activities that would aid me with both future research opportunities and extracurricular …show more content…
Through further exposure with competitions and classes over the past two years, I have developed a growing attachment to virology, specifically the functioning of malaria parasites and their treatments, and hope to collaborate and conduct research with others in the field. Unfortunately, my age, as well as my limited experience with laboratory techniques and research aspects of biology, have continually been limiting factors at all laboratories in the region. As one of the only viable opportunities, the experience of spending time and experimenting in a laboratory with the Biomedical Research Academy would serve as an especially practical introduction to the field of research and for mentored programs in the future.
Studying the mechanisms and anatomy of the human body has always been for me the most intriguing subjects of biology. Ergo, beyond high school, I can envision myself pursuing a dual research pathway in medicine, perhaps expanding on my mother’s footsteps in pathology and embarking on a study of disease. Wherefore, along with volunteering at my local hospital this summer, an experience I eagerly await, the Penn Summer High School program will satisfy me a well-rounded overview of the healthcare field from both the clinical and research

Any course with the designation “AP” sounded challenging, but an intensified class like AP Biology sounded more challenging, due to its extensive lab reports and difficult scientific concepts. Taking AP Biology felt like being a doctor, wearing a lab coat or writing a report for every lab we experimented with. AP Biology not only covered the human body at a molecular level, but also provided me the experience of what working in a lab truly felt like. The experience and the class fascinated me and helped me gain some practical experience with tools such as centrifuges or micropipettes. Like AP Biology, Anatomy/Physiology also provided me with lab experience in dissecting various organisms.…

The human body is arguably the most researched organism on Earth. The intricate relationship between molecular, anatomical and physiological characteristics of it astounds me, yet what interests me most is not how powerful the human body is as a whole, but how ultimately our physiology can fail us. Studying biology at an undergraduate level will allow me to grasp a deeper understanding as to why this happens, as well as develop my existing knowledge of the mechanisms involved in keeping humans alive. A-level biology has provided me with a broad spectrum of knowledge; topics outlining the function of the body, such as the circulatory system and the immune system, have further stimulated my desire to pursue degree level study.…

I was amazed to see internal organs with my naked eyes. The next dissections were a cow eyeball, to observe its anatomical structures, and an earthworm to learn about its circulatory system. Even in elementary school at annual Talent Show, I spoke about the solar system and displayed a model with rotating planets. My passion and past experiences made me pass entrance test at Troy High School, where the Honor Biology class allotted during my ninth grade, and by maintaining a grade I was allowed to have AP Biology during my Junior Year.…

The Biological Perspective is associated with the genetic and physiological component of psychology. In this case, this perspective would be used to determine Post Traumatic Stress Disorder genetic or physiological causes. This perspective’s relation to PTSD is not as direct and independent as the Behavioral and Sociocultural Perspectives. However, the are some factors, both physiologically and genetically, which have contributed to the diagnosis of PTSD. Since PTSD is a condition which requires some form of abuse or traumatizing experience for a diagnosis, the Behavioral Perspective serves as the foundation for the Biological Perspective.…

“Learn for the sake of knowledge and understanding, rather than for the sake of impressing people or taking a test,” was a powerful quote from Dr Benjamin Carson that I take to heart. I came across this excerpt in 2012, nevertheless the passion for in-depth learning has been the motivating force for me in studying medicine since I began my journey a medical student in 2003. During those years of study, I found physiology and pathophysiology fascinates me the most among other subjects in medicine. I strongly believe those two subjects are the cornerstone of medicine.…

    1) Briefly describe your exposure to medicine As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…

Throughout my school career, I have always been exploding with questions about the ins and outs of the natural world and as I have gotten older, this fascination has developed into a curiosity for life at a molecular level. It blows my mind how such complex organisms function as a result of the instructions from the tiny molecule that is DNA; how can it not fascinate you how an entire organism is dictated by the sequence of 4 singles bases? The content this degree will cover, for me, is really exciting as I'd be engaging in a subject that is essentially in its infancy and at the forefront of life-changing scientific discovery. Genetics is a huge interest of mine so I completed an online course-The Genomics Era by St George's Hospital.…
