Laura Esquivel In the book Like Water For Chocolate, Laura Esquivel tells a story about a young girl Tita De La Garza, who is 15 years old and lives on a ranch on the Mexico- U.S border, with her mother and two older sisters. Tita is the youngest daughter to Mama Elena. Although Mama Elena gave birth to Tita on the kitchen table, due to Titas weeping from the onions being cut, Nacha the housemaid and cook, is Titas prime care-taker. Nacha raised Tita in the kitchen preparing food for the family all the time, so Tita became familiar with cooking and brought on quite a talent. Mama Elena was very strict and traditional, especially when it came to her three daughters. The oldest daughter is Rosaura De La Garza. The second oldest is Gertrudis De La Garza, and the youngest is Tita. Tita prepares dishes to feel comfort and feel close to Nacha. Pedro and Tita sneak around to see each other behind Rosaura and Mama Elena's back, and Pedro gives Tita a rose. With that rose, Tita prepares a meal in rose petal sauce, which effects Titas family. For Gertrudis, she is hit with a wave of sexual desire. Gertrudis’s sexual feeling spreads onto Pedro and the feeling even creeps onto Tita.
Gertrudis decides to take a shower to wash off the rose scent her body emitted. Because her passion was so powerful, it evaporated the water and set the shower on fire.
