Integrity is the ability to do the right thing even when it is hard.
Mrs. Dubose is one of the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird that show integrity by beating her addiction. She chose to beat her addiction to morphine which reduces her pain instead of dying in peace. When Jem was force to read to Mrs.Dubose after cutting the tops off every camellia bush she owned. Mrs. Dubose was sick and decided that Jem would read to her for a whole month and when went to her house Jem noticed that she was in bad health conditions. After Jem was done reading to her for a month he went on to doing his own things but then Atticus told Jem that Mrs. Dubose is dead. Scout is one of many of the people in Maycomb that shows that she has integrity.Atticus told Scout to not do anything when someone talk bad about him.Which was hard for her because she is someone who does something when others disrespect her or her family.One day at school Cecil Jacobs told her that Atticus defends niggers and she didn’t like.She was ready to punch him but he reminded herself of what Atticus told her.In the novel it says, “Cecil Jacobs made me forget.He had announced in school yard the day before Scout Finch’s daddy defended niggers. “You can just take that back, boy!”(Lee 85) This shows how Scout was very furious at Cecil for saying that and really wanted to hit him. In the book it also says, “I drew a bead on him, remembered what Atticus has said, then dropped my fist and walked away, “Scout’s a cow-ward!” ringing in my ears.It was the first time I ever walked away from a fight.” (Lee 87 and 88)This shows how Scout really wants to do something about it but she did the right thing and walked away from the fight to keep the promise she made to Atticus. In conclusion, Scout show integrity because she didn’t fight Cecil which she would normally fight them but in this case people were making fun of her for backing
