It is important to develop trust and communication with a teenager. Motor vehicle accidents are the most common reason for death among teens. Promote the proper way and use of seat belts. Homicide is the cause for death among teenagers. Homicide can include the act of someone else killing the individual or the individual killing their self. It is important to talk about guns with the teenager. If the parent owns a gun, it should be locked and not in the reach of a teenager. If a child is depressed or socially detached seek counseling. Encourage the teenager not to accept candy or medicine from their friends or strangers. Educate teenager on illegal drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and prescription medications. Substance abuse is common with teenagers. Anorexia and bulimia are eating disorders seen in teenagers.
