Bystander Effect: The Cause Of Sylvia's Death

Improved Essays
Sylvia Likens was 16 years old when she died on October 26, 1965. Her death was not just a fast painless death, it was long and torturous. Sylvia’s death could have been easily prevented and stopped many times. Many people knew what was going on in the house she was boarding in, yet they did nothing. This situation is a phenomenon known as Bystander Effect. Bystander Effect is when individuals that are involved in a situation do nothing to help the victim. To put it in simplest form, they stand by and watch whatever happens to the victim. Sylvia’s parents were Betty and Lester Likens. She was one out of five children. Her two oldest siblings, Diana and Daniel, were fraternal twins and her two younger siblings, Jenny and Benny, were also fraternal …show more content…
Shortly before Sylvia died, Gertrude began to engrave the words “I’m a prostitute and proud of it!” into Sylvia’s stomach with a needle which was heated by Marie Baniszewski (“Gertrude Baniszewski- The Indiana Torture Murder”). Richard Hobbs had to finish the job when Gertrude was unable to do so. Richard and Shirley then burned the number “3” into her chest (“Gertrude Baniszewski- The Indiana Torture Murder”). A few days before her own death, Sylvia tried to escape, but she was caught by Baniszewski. As punishment, she was tied up in the basement and was given only crackers to eat. After being locked in the basement for two days, she died on October 26, 1965. Stephanie sent Richard to call the police at a nearby payphone (Stall). Like I stated earlier in the paper this horrible death could have been prevented. SEP Fallacy is another psychological effect in which members involved in an issue choose to dissociate themselves from the problem and tell themselves that it is somebody else’s problem to fix. This death is an example of SEP Fallacy taking place in a real life situation.
When the police arrived at the house, Gertrude gave them a letter that she forced Sylvia to write. The letter was to her parents. It said that she agreed to have sexual relationships with a group of boys in exchange for money. The boys supposedly took her away in their car, beat her up, burned her many times, and

Probably Sylvia was destined for persecution because she and her sister had almost no chances of escaping the death and torture on the hands of Gertrude and her children. It is interesting to note that not one child from the Baniszewskis seemed to question the reason of inflicting the torture on poor Sylvia. Also, it is surprising to know that Gertrude had illicit relationship with Richard Hobbs, what time did she meet with him because the family seems to have been present at home more often than going outside and not a single soul has witnessed her relationship with Richard. It is also interesting to question the psychology of the fourteen year old Richard Hobbs. I am curious to know what was on his mind when he was pursuing the sexual relationship with Gertrude.…

The average person only helps twenty percent of the time when others are around, according to the University of Minnesota. This phenomenon is called the bystander effect. People are eighty percent more likely to help someone in need when they are alone versus around other people. Everyone would like to think that they would help someone in need, but in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, a small town’s lottery is a symbol of the bystander effect and how no one questions tradition. The children collect rocks to use for the stoning, everyone jokes around before the names are picked, and the way Mrs. Delacroix comments, “Be a good sport Tessie’” (137) implies that the town thinks ritually killing a person is a game.…

In my opinion, the reason I think that Gertrude threw away the letters that the Likens had written to their daughter because she wanted the girls to think their parents had abandoned them. Sylvia and Jenny called their parents from a pay phone after they found the letter and expressed their concerns. Based on the short conversation in the phone booth, what should have been a red flag was when the girls explained to their parents that their check was late. The Reason I think that this should have been a red flag was because this showed the parents that Gertrude has being lying to the girls and punishing them both for nothing at all. Also, the fact that the girls were in a rush to get off the phone is another red glad as well.…
