While caffeine is not an illegal drug and it is easily accessible in many places, it has some beneficial properties that may create some problems. Caffeine has been proved to increase endurance, concentration, and alertness. Even low doses of caffeine can show an increase in performance. Caffeine may also help decrease the pain of intense workouts. Rather than burning carbohydrates, caffeine helps the body burn fat, which increases endurance. With all of the positives, the question may arise, where are the negatives? Large amounts of caffeine (less for those who do not consume it regularly) can cause tremors of jitteriness but in moderate amounts, caffeine has shown no negative effects in humans. So, where does the line get drawn in athletic competitions? The WADA once banned caffeine from major competitions but this was difficult because of the vast amount of sources caffeine has and its varying effects on different people. People say that caffeine is bad for you. If somebody says this, then they are not telling the truth. In reality, caffeine in moderate amounts only has positive effects if being awake and alert is what you want. In large amounts however, caffeine can create problems such as jitters, trembling, or over time, addiction, so moderation is key. A lot of people also say that caffeine affects their sleep therefor it is not good for you. The most common use for caffeine is to help you stay up, the only other big use is as a pain reliever but even then there are other options. Be smart about when caffeine is consumed. If it is late at night, then it will probably be harder to sleep when you want, but if it is consumed in the morning as a pick-me-up, sleep should not be a problem when the time comes. If used poorly, caffeine can hurt your sleep cycle but if used responsibly, it can be a great tool to help get through the day. It is also a common belief that caffeine hurts you physically, be that weight gain or muscle loss. Caffeine however does quite the opposite. It tends to decrease desire for food helping weight loss and as previously mentioned, helps the body physically in many ways. The common sources for caffeine are where the problem is.
