Case Incident 14.2 – Does the Congregation Care?
Questions
1. Analyze and explain the situation using any of the theories discussed in this chapter.
According to this scenario, when the young pastor first arrived at the independent church, he was full of energy and wanted to be a great leader while performing his duties. Also, he was certainly looking for having a good impact on the members of this community, as well as helping the church to accomplish many things by identifying the congregation’s goals. However, although he was very confident that he would be a good pastor, most of the member of the congregation did not demonstrate the same enthusiasm as he was probably expecting, mainly, because he was viewed as an inexperienced pastor.
Now, from what I can infer, the pastor started with a democratic style so the church’s members would be more involved in the decision-making process and to see what kind of goals each of the members wanted to pursue. As stated by the textbook, “a democratic leader uses this style with the sole purpose to share the decision-making process between the leader and the group” (Rue, Ibrahim, & Byars, 2013). This being said, the young pastor was really hoping that the group members would eventually share new ideas, as well as achieving an excellent quality of work and productivity

Now, I understand that the bishop would not have performed any disciplinary actions of any nature regardless of their feelings on this matter for several reasons: (1) because their main task is appointment of said pastor, (2) the would be hard pressed to find a strong link between the need for strategic planning and the Book of Discipline’s guidelines in which its interpretation is another main task, (3) even if in some fashion the failure of the pastor to impose a strategic planning process was a chargeable offense, any disciplinary action would have to come from the Judiciary Council after the situation was assessed by an investigating committee. Given the American context, in which my congregation is situated, where the highest profiled role of an authoritative structure usually holds most if not all of the power, it is easy for a congregational member to believe the bishop has all, or at least a large amount of, the power in the denomination. I wonder, had this individual known about the lack of disciplinary power this role holds if he would…

This is wrong. The merit of the preacher has little to do with the acceptance of the gospel, and people in comparison to God are dumb and shortsighted. These people need to pray that God raise up another leader, and while they wait, they must preach and faithfully trust that God will provide for His people another expositor. The office of pastor should never be given to one who has a lot of character flaws; it should only be given to those men who are above reproach. To compromise ANYTHING that is a major problem with the pastor is to focus more on human proclamation rather than the power of God.…

Obviously, this will reduce workloads and the pastor might have much time to concentrate on sound doctrine and spiritual matters. But in practical life, for small church it is unnecessary to appoint ruling elder and teaching elders where the pastor is sufficient doing all work. And sometimes it is unclear for the ordinary church people distinguish differences between their responsibilities, as both of them are involved with feeding, leading, and protecting the flock. By the way, my personal assessment is that the work frames are real important for measurement the strengths and weaknesses of our current system, as well as any systems we try out at any…

True and significant life is found in Jesus Christ and because of my firm conviction of this it has been my primary objective to point people to Jesus. Being persuaded that Christ wants Christians and especially those who take leadership roles to minister to the needs of others, I have ordered my life to conform to that conviction. Ultimately, Jesus desires that each Christian serves him by serving others; this is accomplished in a variety of ways – feeding those who are hungry, teaching everyone the life saving Gospel, and by leading in a way that reflects the glory of Christ. It has been my immense pleasure to have had the opportunity to preach God’s Word to thousands of people over the past fifteen years. It is my sincere passion to see people embrace Christ Jesus as their Lord and savior and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds through the Word of God.…

Pastors must be servant-leaders and not lord it over their flock. Gregory presents important points with much wisdom that pastors would do well to follow as an example. There are some (many) who should not be in pastoral ministry because they lead their flock astray. This is due to the fact that there are pastors who do not have sound doctrine which leads to wolves invading the flock. One must be called into pastoral ministry by God in order to do this important work.…

For my pastoral interview, I choose to interview the Senior Pastor of Huntington Central Church (Disciples of Christ) Rev. Jacque Parlato. I started the interview by asking Pastor Jacque to describe her call to ministry. More precisely I asked her to describe her calling from the time she first received it up until now. During this question Pastor Jacque began by telling me about her background and early life. She informed me that she was born and raised in Santiago California, to parents that she described as people who didn’t have everything put together.…

He set out several years ago to identify some of the problems that exist in theological education and preparing pastors for the future. In all his strudies he has discovered that people do not go to church to learn about politics, movements, or conflict management. Leith says that they come “to hear about what God has done for human beings and for their salvation, to hear the Christian hope in the presence of death.”…
