Behavior therapy had its beginning in the early 1900’s and was consider an official psychological approach in the late 1950’s. Many people contributed to the development of behavior therapy but some of the main key figures of the therapy were B.F. Skinner, Arnold Lazarus, and Albert Bandura. Behavior Therapy is designed to help a person recognize and understand that by eliminating bad behaviors it will help them also eliminate the way they are feeling. The methods of this approach are always a way of improvement. (Herkov, 2013). Behavior therapy can be used to treat many different things and one of them is eating disorders. Behavior therapy doesn’t only focus on giving advice and listening to the patient open up about their problems, but mainly the role of this therapy it’s to find a solution to the problem and help the client overcome it. First step taken in this therapy is self-monitoring. The client would have to write down everything they do during the day and it would help the counselor see what exactly the person is doing and what might be the trigger of the reactions and behaviors during the whole day. After that, the counselor would be able to work with the person and make a new schedule of activities replacing the risky activities with active activities in order to keep the client occupied (Krucik, 2013). Both of these approaches would help to improve the situation because the therapist would be giving Sandy different activities that will keep her mind in a positive way rather than a negative way.
Role Playing Also role playing is another technique that is used in behavior therapy. The purpose for this is to help the client generate new skills and strengthen those that might come up in social encounters with others (Herkov, 2013). Role playing would be one of the skills that would help Sandy the most because not only would she be able to develop new skills in how to approach certain situation, or how to speak to people, but she will be able to reintegrate herself a lot easier into society by developing more social and talking
