How many of us are guilty when it comes to not actively listening to others speak? After 15 years of teaching experience, listening continues to be a challenge for me. According to Evans and Alire (2014), “Effective listening is harder than most people realize.” Listening, not hearing takes patience, skills, and effort. University of Minnesota Duluth (n.d.) mentions how the biggest difference between hearing and listening is “hearing is simply the act of perceiving sound by the ear” and listening is “something you consciously choose to do”.
