The French Revolution started out as a peaceful, for the most part, revolt to have the citizens’ demands met. Then it “escalated at a pace never before seen in history” (602). The Reign of Terror and the Law of 22 Prairial left too many people dead for the world to ignore. France will never be the same because of their actions from 1789-1799. The French Revolution was a watershed moment in European history that changed French society, politics, and international relations for the worst.

Europe was petrified that their citizens would revolt against their government too, and so all of Europe got involved in the revolution. The situation got even worse when the new government of France made the Decree of Fraternity, which stated that France would help any country who chose to revolt against their government. Later, Europe’s fear occurred because the Dutch, Belgians, and Poles were inspired by this revolution (623). Each country fought the revolutionaries and some countries tried to rescue the royal family with no success. Austria tried saving the royal family but the king was recognized by a postmaster who knew him from “his portrait on the new French money” (605). The family was arrested in a town called Varennes. Sweden also tried protecting King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette by helping them escape. The escape plan failed because the king was recognized and consequently the king and queen were arrested for treason again. After the escape plans failed, Austria and Prussia immediately went to war with France, and Austria “issued a manifesto announcing that Paris would be totally destroyed if the royal family suffered any violence” (606).
