Childhood obesity is a growing problem in the United States. Obesity is the condition of having an extremely excessive amount of body weight.The BMI(Body Mass Index) of an obese person is 30.0-39.9 and overly obese is 40.0+. The higher the BMI, the more fat a person has. Obesity can increase the risk of someone getting heart disease and cancer. In 2013, the American Medical Association declared obesity a disease that must be treated with medical solutions. Due to obesity, a program called CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) is seeking a $60,000 grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth. With this grant, CATCH would teach younger kids (Grades K-4) about how to be physically active and eating healthy. The owners of the program want kids to be excited about going outside, being active and nutrition. For example, a main cause of obesity is fast, fried foods such as KFC and McDonald’s. A cartoonist draws a political cartoon and depicts a problem using pictures and captions. I chose this method because people can understand a cartoon more clearly than a written essay. Cartoons are eye catching because of the pictures and colors. A person would much rather look at a cartoon than read a page of words. In this generation, people are more used to skipping to the pictures in a magazine rather than reading the stories on other pages. During the creation of my cartoon, I wanted people to be startled and frightened of what could happen to them if they don’t eat healthy or exercise.
