For those of you NOT following the life-threatening news surrounding Chipotle, here is a quick catch up: Chipotle was slammed by a lawsuit at the end of 2015 for failing to disclose information about transgressions against food safety. This accusation was brought on by the outbreak of E. Coli found in Chipotle’s notoriously fresh ingredients. Nearly 500 people have contracted a foodborne illness from the Chipotle chain since July. Ironically, 374 of the 500 people sickened contracted the Norovirus/Norwalk virus from sick employees which had nothing to do with Chipotle’s ingredients. Taking that into account there were nearly 126 people that may have been sickened by Chipotle’s ingredients, but none died. As an avid Chipotle enthusiast, I never thought twice about the risk of eating out. You don’t go to a restaurant and worry about diseases. You worry about how many ingredients you can stuff into your burrito, not how they were prepared. Chipotle has taken a small step to right their wrongs, but is it enough? I suggest they start a campaign on food safety for everyone. As a broke college student, I personally do not have the time for E. Coli. I think many consumers would appreciate an informational ad. campaign that informs us of the risks, signs, and ways to stay safe when it comes to food preparation. Now for those of you who are about to boycott chipotle, DON’T. Since they have been so publically scrutinized, you can bet that Chipotle is definitely going to have their business together after this training. The lines are short, the counters are spotless, and the food is still delicious! So yes people, go to Chipotle. I for one am anxiously waiting for the day our local Chipotle opens its doors. Don’t
