Native to southern Europe, clary sage essential oil comes from the Lamiaceae family and has a fresh sweet herbaceous, wine-like aroma with floral notes. Clary sage oil has been cultivated for centuries. Once, extensively cultivated in France, now Russia is the main supplier. The oil is steam-distilled for its medicinal and cosmetic qualities, and the best clary sage oil is obtained from the green parts of the plants, especially the flowering tops. The oil boasts the rare ability to soothe the stressed nerves and emotions brought on by the hormonal cycle. It’s for this reason that it has earned the name "woman's oil."

Research Studies:
Research from the College of Pharmacy, Sookmyung Women's University, Korea studied the use of clary sage oil on menopausal women. Researchers measured the significant change in depression once the women were treated with clary sage oil. Sclareol, a diterpenol known for its hormone balancing effects, may play a role in clary sage’s antidepressant-like properties. When the oil was introduced to the women by inhalation, cortisol levels (stress hormone) decreased and serotonin (mood and sleep regulator) increased significantly.

Non-toxic and non-irritant. Non-to mildly sensitizing. Clary sage oil may induce an "estrogen-like action." So, it’s for that reason, those with breast cancer, at high risk for breast cancer or that need to carefully regulate their estrogen levels avoid Clary Sage.
