Imagine a world where sex didn’t sell, a world in which consumers cared about the performance of a product and it’s effects on themselves. Today advertising is so successful that people are often convinced to purchase food, or other goods that have no benefit. We live in such a Monkey see, monkey do society. People will see a product consumed by someone attractive or famous and instantly assume that the product is good, or even something that the person uses in their actual life. In the article, “COMPANY TOWN: Seduced by a juicy burger” by Dan Neil, Neil points out, “These products have definite measurable health consequences, and it’s the job of advertising imagery to push these consequences as far offstage as possible” (Neil, Para. 18). …show more content…
did in the commercial was wrong, the sexualization of a burger, and hiding the negative effects of their food. That would be the consumer side of me, but the producer side of me, if I was Carl’s Jr. I would do things the exact same way. Neil states, “ I cannot pretend to be offended by these ads. Young men are coarse, callow, emotional, imbeciles with suicidal dietary habits. In other words, from a marketing perspective, these ads are perfection itself, practically verite.” (Para. 8). Although his statement may sound harsh, as a young man myself, I believe everything he said to be true. When I first saw the commercial I completely forgot it was for a burger, I was too focused on the attractive woman. Once I remembered the focus of the commercial it made me want to go try the burger for myself. I mean if this beautiful woman,with a nice figure, and a background in food enjoys it, why wouldn’t I? I didn’t stop to think about how many calories it had, or how much sodium. I just saw a good looking burger and wanted to try it. The commercial was perfect because the point is to show the burger and attract consumers to try it. It may not be the most respectable way, or the right way in some people's opinions, but it gets the job
