The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963 Comparative Essay For the Watsons Go to Birmingham, it is my belief that the novel is much better than the movie. Kenny, at the beginning, was naive, and believed the world was, well, maybe not perfect but close enough. Nearing the end though, something changed. For a brief time, he seemed almost depressed. He would stay behind the couch all the time, ignoring his family and believing in magical creatures that would come and save him. They never did. However, after Byron talked to him he seemed to recover and came out to see his family, who happened to be very worried about him.
