The society in the popular utopian/dystopian book, The Giver, may seem the better alternative of our modern day society, the dream land that everyone wishes we could achieve, but when we compare how each society functions, maybe this so called ¨perfect world¨ isn't as perfect as we would have hoped it to be. Modern day society and The Giver have may have some similarities, but when the two societies are compared to rules, family, and figurehead/leadership, it seems these two societies are worlds apart. Maybe, we have it better in our society than we originally thought.

Though arguments break out every so often between siblings or parents, we would do anything for our families, we would be sad to see them go, and we wouldn't want to leave them behind in any situation. In The Giver, families seem to have mutual feeling between each other. ¨Do you love me?¨ There was an awkward silence for a moment. Then Father gave a little chuckle. ¨Jonas. You, of all people, precision of language, please!¨ (Lowry 127) You could ask, ¨Do you enjoy me?¨ The answer is ¨Yes,¨ his mother said.¨ The families in The Giver may have a little more feeling for each other than others in the community, but that's most likely because they have to live with each other, so they eventually get used to being around them. Families in The Giver seem less family like and more friendly like. Another difference in family´s is how they are formed. In modern society husbands and wife meet each other, fall in love and get married. If they want to, they can have children together. In The Giver´s society husband and wife are assigned to each other. They may have never even met each other, but they get married anyway. If they want kids, they must apply to get them, and then they receive them at a ceremony. They are only allowed to have two children, one boy and one girl, anymore than that is forbidden. In The Giver's Society leadership is much the same. Their leaders are not chosen by the people, but to the residents knowledge, they have freedom as well, and like modern society, there leaders are also able to hide anything not to be seen by the public. ¨The books in his own dwelling were the only books that Jonas had ever seen. He had never known that other books existed. But this room was completely covered by bookcases, filled, which reached the ceiling.¨ (Lowry 74) In The Giver's society, though the government is able to hide stuff from majority of the people, they don't really know what they are hiding. All info not obtainable by majority, is held in the mind of the giver. The leaders of their society can identify a problem, but because they don't have knowledge of the past, they aren't sure how to fix the problem. They use the help of the giver to find a solution. ¨And when I am called by the committee of elders, I appear before them, to give them counsel and advice.¨ (Lowry 103) Though they never want to hear about the issue and what it leads too, they use the giver´s advice to keep the community the way it's always been, safe in the eyes of the ones not aware, but in the eyes of the others, a very messed up world.
