Two groups who have lived together for thousands of years, were torn apart. The Tutsi and Hutu tribes of Rwanda became “enemies” in 1885, when Germany attained rule of the nation. Germany had given power to the Tutsi who were 14% of Rwanda population. The Tutsi gained education, jobs, & wealth from Germany’s colonization. After World War I, Germany lost its rule of Rwanda and Belgium took control. Under Belgian rule, not much changed as far as either tribe's power. Then in 1959, Rwanda gained its independence. The Hutu obtained power being 85% of the population. The Hutu wanted vengeance from all the years the Tutsi had power, so the Tutsi were discriminated against.
