In the report of “How OJJDP Is Improving Outcomes for the Nation’s Youth” it talks about what the act was about and has statistics of how successful it has been. To support the transition of juveniles to adulthood there were programs to reduce juvenile delinquency and crime, protecting children from sexual exploitation, and abuse. It also helped improve the juvenile justice system to protect the public’s safety. One of the programs was the Socioeconomic Mapping and Resource Topography (SMART). What it does is it shows the geographic area of crime and delinquency. Then from there it also shows it there is a nearby government agency or community resource to help prevent and control illegal activities. The people who used this was the Federal and State juvenile justice program, Department of Health and Human Services, as well as Housing and Urban Development. In order to approve grants to help fight Juvenile delinquency, the application is required to go through SMART that has a formula. The bill S. 1169: Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Reauthorization Act of 2015, is to reauthorize and improve the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974. It was introduced to the Senate on April 30th, 2015, and is currently placed on the Senate Legislative calendar under general orders. H.R. 5963 is very similar to S. 1169. It was first introduced in September 8th, 2016 and has already passed the House of Representative. It is currently placed on the Senate Legislative calendar under general orders as well. The main goals of the bill are to set up children for long term success, reform state juvenile system, and prevention service of at risk youth. Not only is it a reform for youths but for some states as well. Those who are currently still using old practices due to not being exposed to other working strategies from other states, or maybe not even having the right amount of funds to execute programs. The bill will create data to better understand race, gender, and causes to delinquency. Also help those coming out of the justice system get reintegrated to society. It will also help the increasing amount of females in the juvenile justice system. These are just some of the programs that will be implemented if the bill is passed.
