I say this because, individualism in chapter 5 is defined as individuals motivated by their own preferences, needs and rights when they come into conflict with those of a group or collective in which the individual is a member. However, collectivism is when individuals are motivated by the groups or collectives preferences, needs, and rights. They emphasize group identity and the well-being of in-groups. My culture can sometimes express an independent demeanor, and contain their own goals in life. However, as a group or as a family we strive to assist and lean on one another in times of need. It enhanced my intercultural competence, in which it gives me the ability to communicate appropriately, effectively, and ethically with people from diverse backgrounds. Each member within my class group contained different morals, ideas, and cultures. This not only increased my non-verbal and verbal communication, but also my world-mindedness. It opened my eyes to accept and respect other cultures customs. At the beginning of the school year when we completed our first reflection paper my verbal communication needed improvement. Since then I have taken the initiative to limit distractions, also known as the noise. This way I am able to effectively communicate in a timely manner.
