For several years, women have fought to achieve equal rights, but a woman’s status is still not equal in most of the countries. Although there is gender equality legally, it is easily to see that a male becomes a head of a family. In some places, women have more power than men do, or women are equal to men. However, the gender roles don’t change a lot. Women traditionally take over the home while men go outside the home to seek resources. Back in the day, African American women and wives were expected to support and encourage their husbands and children. As a homemaker, caretaker, and nurturer, an African American was expected to be a good wife and a good mother. Submissiveness and obedience were needed. However, in today’s modern society, the roles of African American women were not limited to domestic chores. Since African American men could not fulfill their fatherly role in the society, African American women have to take care of the home and finances. If an African American woman doesn’t want to do both housework and full time job, there will be no one who blames that woman. It is not a mandatory role.
