In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence speaks a monologue conveying the correlation between nature and its devastating effects of both life and demise, asserting, “The Earth that’s nature mother is her tomb” (2.3.8). Friar portrays one’s downfall on Earth, exhibiting the life cycle (birth to death), which leads to adverse physical and emotional effects. Clearly, the motif of darkness from this bereavement indicates how nature presents a false sense of chance to its people when granting life. Friar Lawrence also specifically probes the words “tomb” and “womb”, enhancing diction and a lamentable tone both figuratively and connotatively.
