Death Penalty In America

The death penalty is one of the most controversial issues in American society. Public remains heavily divide on its views between the death penalty and life imprisonment. While there are many American believe the death penalty is the symbol of justice and a good retaliation for homicide crime, the amount of opposition is not small and want abolish this capital punishment. According to Amnesty International USA, 35 states in the USA still use the death penalty as a weapon to deter criminals, nevertheless there are 140 countries in the world without the death penalty. However, America is a civilized society, but not a barbaric society. America should not use a cruel and inhuman penalty to punish crimes. The Universal Declaration claims that “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” So that death penalty significant violates human dignity and human rights: Right to life. Death penalty is for retribution and revenge, however American are living in one of the most civilized society, the leader of the world, so we need to protect the values of human dignity. Law and punishment need to use to make criminal realize what have they actually done but not revenge or retribution. For example, we do not rape a rapist because we have to prove to be better than those criminals. Death penalty does not fix the problem or bring back somebody’s life, it just takes another life.
