Get ready” by Henry T. Greely, he talked about the future of reproduction. There are already people who are having children with the help of technology. It is said that in a few years people will not have sex to reproduce, instead they will look towards Artificial insemination and In Vitro fertilization. One of the major issues with these procedures is the cost. Not many people can afford to do it so the rate in which people actually perform the procedure is low. If the price went down, there is a chance more people will do it. Once people do In Vitro they can decide to go a step further and pick the characteristics of their child, by simply choosing the best fit embryo. For other parents, they do not want to have to choose due to the morals in which they stand by, but they can still get a preview into what their son or daughter will look like. Another topic Greely touched on is the ability for same sex couples to have children of their own. In Vitro allows them to either use their own sperm or eggs and they also have the option to get a donor. Now it is just the waiting game on whether or not “designer babies” will become the norm (Greely). This article was written to inform the reader that there is research being done on “designer babies”. In fact, they think it is a better option for children and their parents. They can choose an embryo that is not going to be affected by a certain gene and then their child will not have a specific disease, but that does not make up for the fact that one of the embryos just gets thrown away. Also when someone changes the genes to avoid a disease there is always a possibility that the gene pools gets messed up. Overall, there are more cons in the situation than pros and “designer babies” are not worth the risk. Some people are not able to have children for medical reasons so they have to look into In Vitro Fertilization for further help, but “designer babies” are going farther than that. “Designer babies” should be illegal in the future because it is taking In Vitro Fertilization too far, it is unethical, not always reliable, and parents can have children without choosing their specific characteristics. There is a difference between easy decision making and moral decision making, but it is the effort that everyone has to put in to make the correct
