It may be hard to think how two people could be so similar, but so different at the same time. Some people may be so similar that others might think there could be no difference between them. Or, others may think that some people are so different that they could have nothing in common. In the book The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, Johnny and Dally have many similarities, yet have differences, too. Both Johnny and Dally live in an abusive environment and have parents that certainly do not care about them. Also, Dally and Johnny can relate to each other by their similarities, which makes them care about each other. While these two characters may seem alike, they also have some differences. Johnny is a law-abiding citizen, while on the other hand, Dally cannot do things the legal way. Johnny clearly never wants to get in trouble, as the only time ever seems to get into trouble in the story is when he accidentally kills Bob. The whole gang knows that Johnny is the person who gets into mischief the least. Ponyboy even says, “And Johnny, who was the most law-abiding of us” (34). Everywhere he goes, he has to do something illegal. Dally has done almost everything a person could get arrested for. Pony even states, “They have a file of him down at the police station. He had been arrested, he got drunk, he rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, jumped small kids-he did everything” (11). Obviously, Dally cannot follow the rules. He is on file for almost every crime. Therefore, Dally and Johnny are unquestionably different when it comes to following the …show more content…
Dally tries not to let anything bother him. He does not show many emotions and always tries to be the tough one. Ponyboy says about Dally, “He was tougher than the rest of us-tougher, colder, meaner” (10). Dally clearly is not the type that cares about many people. He does not want to show how he feels. Meanwhile, Johnny is the complete opposite. He is like a puppy that has been kicked too many times. Johnny does not even try to be tough because he knows he never will be. Pony describes Johnny and states, “He had a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes” (11). It is distinct that Johnny is a sensitive person. He always looks scared and nervous. These two characters clearly have different personalities as Dally is tough, and Johnny is
